Hi folks

because there is so much discussion about video encoding I just made a quick comparision shot on a rencode of seacastles torrent

http://www.mousebits.com/index.php?page=torrent-details&id=962140f7114df45f063b5a6dcb1642847cf51934

(I left them in uncompressed VLC output png format so no additional compression is applied)

here is a screenshot of the original file (dv codec / x deinterlaced with VLC) (2,14GB) (couldn reprodce the other frames exactly because vnc did go baserk on the codec)

here is a x264 reencode 2pass with a size aim of ~500MB (including 128kbps aac audio)

I can see come degrading from 500 to 150 in the fine red cloud structures in the middle of the picture but the rest is pretty much the same, what do you think ?

I think x264 has the potential to reduce the size of video to an incredible amout (at least from source material)
as x264 I use ripbotx264 that makes encoding basicly just drag drop and click

Dolby,

Nice comparison . After my osborne lights video, I know that x264 is the way to go.

Cheers,
